The symptom is useful—but it is not the diagnosis
A shake in the steering wheel or pulsation in the brake pedal tells a technician when the vibration occurs. It does not, by itself, prove that a particular component is defective.
A measured inspection should determine whether the condition is related to rotor thickness variation or runout, a mounting-surface issue, pad or caliper operation, tire or wheel problems, or looseness elsewhere in the steering and suspension system.
What the technician should check
The exact procedure depends on the vehicle and symptom, but the inspection should go beyond looking at pad thickness.
- Pad and rotor condition and measurements
- Caliper slides, hardware, hoses and hydraulic operation
- Hub and rotor mounting surfaces
- Tire, wheel and steering or suspension conditions that can create similar vibration
- A road test when the vehicle is safe to drive
When not to keep driving
Stop driving and arrange service if the pedal sinks, stopping ability decreases, fluid is leaking, the vehicle pulls severely, or the vibration rapidly worsens. Those changes can indicate a safety concern beyond normal wear.
Brake loss, a sinking pedal, fluid leakage or reduced stopping ability requires immediate attention.
